In modern automatic control systems, the importance of control valves is increasingly evident, and these valves are becoming ever more intelligent to deliver enhanced performance. Intelligent control valve systems integrate the functions of sensors, controllers, and control valves into a single unit, thereby significantly simplifying the automation control process. Smart Valve Positioner The system’s main advantages are as follows:
I. Intelligent Control. The intelligent valve positioner system features enhanced control intelligence: under programmatic control, it can function as a control valve by receiving 4–20 mA signals to adjust valve opening; alternatively, it can operate independently as a standalone controller or transmitter. When used as a controller, it accepts 4–20 mA analog signals, digital signals transmitted via the RS-485 interface, or performs PID control according to a pre-programmed sequence.
II. Communication Intelligence. The intelligent valve positioner system can be connected to the main control room via digital communication. Addressable digital signals transmitted from the main control room are received by the intelligent control valves through the cable, enabling the host computer to regulate and manage the entire valve bank. Alternatively, the system can be networked using other methods, supporting both standalone connections and multi-valve networking. Furthermore, the intelligent control valve system allows for remote monitoring, tuning, and modification of parameters or algorithms.
3. Diagnostic Intelligence. Deploying an intelligent control valve system on-site is faster, more accurate, and safer than centralized control from the instrument control room. This is because centralized control systems require a longer processing time to monitor and analyze data acquired by sensors; in particular, with long pneumatic signal transmission lines, significant delays can occur. In contrast, using an on-site intelligent control valve system for diagnostics and control allows for highly timely responses.
IV. Intelligent Protection. The intelligent protection feature of the smart valve positioner system is manifested in two aspects: first, protecting the control valve itself; second, protecting the entire system. A key characteristic of smart control valves is their ability to perform self-protection after accurate diagnosis. For example, they monitor the power supply phase sequence and signal inputs to the electric actuator to ensure proper motor rotation; if the valve becomes jammed, the power supply is automatically cut off to prevent motor burnout, while an alarm is promptly triggered; and when packing leakage occurs or when parameters such as temperature, pressure, and valve position change, the system makes timely adjustments.
