An electric valve positioner is a key accessory for control valves. It uses the valve stem displacement signal as the feedback measurement input and the controller output signal as the setpoint, comparing the two. When a deviation exists, it adjusts the output signal sent to the actuator, thereby driving the actuator to operate and establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the valve stem displacement and the controller output signal. Next, we will introduce the functions of the electric valve positioner.
1. Electrical valve positioners are used in control systems with stringent performance requirements, necessitating enhanced positioning accuracy and improved reliability of control valves.
2. Installation shall be carried out at locations where the pressure differential across the valve exceeds 1 MPa. By increasing the air pressure, the actuator’s output force is enhanced, thereby overcoming the external forces exerted by the fluid on the valve spool and reducing positioning errors during travel.
3. To prevent external leakage, when the flowing fluid is at high temperature, high pressure, low temperature, or is toxic, flammable, or explosive, the packing is typically compressed very tightly, increasing the friction between the valve stem and the packing. In such cases, a positioner can be used to overcome the time delay.
4. When the fluid is viscous or contains solid suspended particles, the use of a positioner can reduce the resistance exerted by the fluid on the valve stem movement.
5. The positioner also compensates for the lag in control-signal transmission, thereby improving the valve’s response speed.
6. Improve the flow characteristics of the control valve.
7. When a single controller is used to operate two actuators, two positioners may be employed—one for low-range operation and the other for high-range operation—each receiving a low-input signal and a high-input signal, respectively, thereby achieving split-range control.
