Valve positioners are classified by structure into pneumatic valve positioners, electric valve positioners, and smart valve positioners. They are essential accessories for control valves and are typically used in conjunction with pneumatic control valves. A valve positioner receives the output signal from the controller and uses this signal to regulate the pneumatic control valve. Once the control valve actuates, the displacement of the valve stem is fed back to the positioner via a mechanical linkage, and the valve position information is transmitted to the higher-level system in the form of an electrical signal.
Positioner Classification
1. Valve positioners are classified according to their input signals into pneumatic valve positioners, electric valve positioners, and smart valve positioners.
(1) The input signal of a pneumatic valve positioner is a standard pneumatic signal, such as 20–100 kPa, and its output signal is also a standard pneumatic signal.
(2) The input signal for an electric valve positioner is a standard current or voltage signal, such as a 4–20 mA current signal or a 1–5 V voltage signal. Inside the valve positioner, this electrical signal is converted into electromagnetic force, which then drives the pneumatic output signal to the pilot control valve.
(3) The intelligent electric valve positioner converts the current signal from the control room into a pneumatic signal that drives the control valve. By compensating for the frictional force of the valve stem during operation and offsetting the unbalanced forces caused by fluctuations in process pressure, it ensures that the valve opening corresponds precisely to the current signal output by the control room. In addition, it allows for intelligent configuration and parameter setting, thereby improving the performance of the control valve.
2. Based on the direction of action, valve positioners can be classified as unidirectional or bidirectional. A unidirectional valve positioner is used with piston-type actuators and operates in only one direction, whereas a bidirectional valve positioner acts on both sides of the cylinder in a piston-type actuator, thereby functioning in both directions.
