The valve positioner is a key component of the control valve; it receives the signal from the controller and, in turn, outputs a control signal to actuate the control valve. Its primary functions are to increase the output power of the control valve, enhance the speed of signal regulation, and accelerate the movement of the valve stem, thereby improving the accuracy of valve positioning. The specific functions of the valve positioner include the following:
① Valve positioners are generally used in control systems that demand exceptionally high control quality, primarily to enhance the positioning accuracy and reliability of control valves. In other words, the use of a valve positioner significantly improves both the precision and reliability of control valve positioning.
②If there is a significant pressure differential across the valve, it can be adjusted by using a valve regulator. Increasing the air supply pressure to enhance the actuator’s output force can reduce unbalanced forces and minimize errors in stroke.
③ If the medium being regulated exhibits characteristics such as high temperature, high pressure, toxicity, or explosiveness, measures must be taken to prevent external leakage. Typically, to mitigate leakage, the packing is tightened very tightly, which in turn generates substantial friction between the valve stem and the packing. To overcome this friction, a positioner is required.
④ If the regulated medium is a viscous fluid or a suspension containing solid particles, the positioner can overcome the resistance generated by the valve stem as it moves through such a medium.
⑤ When the regulator’s nominal diameter exceeds 100 mm, the valve positioner can enhance the actuator’s output capability.
⑥ When a single controller is used to simultaneously control two actuators, split-range control requires the use of valve positioners that can accept and output two signals—one for the high-range signal and one for the low-range signal. This configuration enables split-range regulation.
