Smart valve positioners are classified according to their input signals into electric smart valve positioners and pneumatic smart valve positioners. If the input of a smart valve positioner is a standard 0–10 mA DC or 4–20 mA DC signal and the output is a standard 20–100 kPa signal, it is an electric smart valve positioner; if the input is a standard 20–100 kPa signal and the output is also a standard 20–100 kPa signal, it is a pneumatic smart valve positioner.
The smart valve positioner is an essential accessory for control valves. It uses the valve stem displacement signal as the feedback measurement signal and the controller output signal as the setpoint signal, comparing the two; when a deviation exists, it adjusts the output signal to the actuator, thereby driving the actuator to operate and establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the valve stem displacement and the controller output signal. Consequently, the smart valve positioner constitutes a feedback control system in which the valve stem displacement serves as the measured variable and the controller output serves as the setpoint. Due to its ability to perform the following key functions, it has become an important piece of equipment in control systems:
  1. The intelligent valve positioner can increase the output power of the control valve, reduce the transmission lag of the control signal, and enhance the travel speed of the valve stem.
  2. When the pressure differential across the control valve exceeds 1 MPa, the smart valve positioner can increase the output pressure and counteract the effects of unbalanced forces.
  3. Intelligent valve positioners can improve the dynamic performance of control valves and reduce the lag in the transmission of control signals.
  4. Another important function of the smart valve positioner is to compensate for the instability of the actuator diaphragm and the effects of dry friction in the moving parts, thereby enhancing the control valve’s positioning accuracy and reliability.
