Smart valve positioners are a product of the modern era and serve as field instruments in smart automation systems. Thanks to the integration of microprocessors, adjustment of these positioners is significantly more convenient, and their application scope is exceptionally broad. In smart automation applications, what specific characteristics do they exhibit?
First, installation is simple and configuration is highly flexible; most functions are implemented via software, such as automatic adjustment of control setpoints, travel limit setting, and staged control. It is also very convenient to change the direct–reverse action of the control valve and to modify its flow characteristics.
Second, it has low air consumption: traditionally, components of electric valve positioners were pneumatic-consuming types, whereas modern valve positioners employ pulse-pressure actuation.
The preceding section discussed two key characteristics of the positioner. However, routine maintenance is still essential for the positioner in everyday operation. The following outlines the maintenance procedures.
When removing the valve from the positioner, first disconnect the power supply. During removal, carefully insulate the positive and negative terminals with electrical tape to prevent short circuits or serious accidents. After repeated inspections, the positioner may experience a decline in the sealing integrity of many components; moreover, exposure to rainwater or corrosive substances can damage the device. Therefore, regular inspection of the equipment’s sealing performance is essential. In addition, the positioner’s operating condition should be monitored regularly to ensure that no issues arise.
