With the advancement of smart instrumentation technology, microelectronics has been widely integrated into conventional instruments, significantly enhancing their functionality and performance. A valve positioner is a key accessory for control valves and is typically used in conjunction with pneumatic control valves. It receives the output signal from the controller and uses this signal to regulate the pneumatic control valve. Once the control valve actuates, the displacement of the valve stem is fed back to the valve positioner via a mechanical linkage, and the valve position information is transmitted as an electrical signal to the higher-level control system.
Positioners can be classified according to their operating principles into pneumatic positioners, electric positioners, and smart positioners.
Working principle of an electric valve positioner. The electric valve positioner is a primary accessory for control valves. It uses the valve stem displacement signal as the feedback measurement signal and the controller output signal as the setpoint signal, compares the two, and when a deviation exists, adjusts the output signal sent to the actuator to drive the actuator’s motion, thereby establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the valve stem displacement and the controller output signal. Consequently, the valve positioner constitutes a feedback control system in which the valve stem displacement serves as the measured variable and the controller output serves as the setpoint. The manipulated variable of this control system is the output signal from the valve positioner to the actuator.
How to select a valve positioner? We specialize in the sales of electronic spare parts and related solution services, covering industrial automation, process automation, and power automation.
