This is because, under normal operating conditions, the zero-position spring operates within its linear range, with a limited range of length variation; consequently, the mechanical travel of the span-adjustment mechanism is also constrained, which in turn limits the adjustability of both the zero-spring length and the amplification factor of the span-adjustment mechanism.
