Valve positioner surge can be caused by a variety of factors: The first possibility is that the actuator air chamber is too small and the positioner sensitivity is set too high, leading to surge. This occurs because, when the input signal changes, the positioner’s output air pressure rises far beyond the required level.

Principle of the valve positioner: The feedback lever detects changes in the valve opening position. When the electromagnetic torque generated by the input signal equals the torque produced by the positioner’s feedback system, the force-balance system of the positioner reaches equilibrium, and the positioner stabilizes. At this point, the input signal is proportionally related to the valve position. However, if the input signal changes or external forces such as fluid flow act on the system, the equilibrium of the force-balance system is disrupted, resulting in an imbalance between the force exerted by the magneto-electric assembly and the force generated in the feedback loop due to changes in the valve stem position. As a result of the action of the nozzle and baffle, the output pressure of the positioner’s air supply changes, thereby affecting the actuator.

Having the split-ranging function means that the valve positioner responds only to a specific range of the input signal (e.g., 4–12 mA or 0.02–0.06 MPaG).
