Pioneering intelligent manufacturing in industry and boosting China’s industrial development

From an early age, Liu Xi excelled academically. In 1983, he was admitted to Huazhong University of Science and Technology with the second-highest score in the entire county, and in 1987, he was directly recommended for graduate studies as the top student in his class. During his graduate studies, in addition to majoring in microelectronics, he also took elective courses in automation, laying a solid technical foundation that later guided him toward a career in automation. After graduation, he joined a directly affiliated enterprise under the Provincial Department of Information Industry, where he devoted more than two decades to industrial automation and artificial intelligence, accumulating extensive technical expertise. He led teams in developing automated projects such as a distributed control system for synthetic crystal production, a distributed control system for power plant boilers, an intelligent gas emission system for coal mines, a comprehensive performance testing system for high-voltage circuit breakers, and a nano-photocatalytic water treatment device, earning multiple national-level new-product awards. He himself has been honored with the Second Prize for Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress, the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Ministry of Electronics, and the State Council Special Allowance Expert title. Notably, under his leadership, the distributed control system for synthetic crystals achieved an 85% market share, ranking first in its niche segment, showcasing both his technical prowess and marketing acumen. In 2010, Liu Xi traveled to North America—specifically the United States and Canada—to explore entrepreneurial opportunities. While there, he hosted a friend who worked in petrochemical instrumentation marketing back home. During their conversation, he keenly noticed the high-end intelligent control of pneumatic valves: due to the high technical barriers, this field remained largely untapped in China, with domestic technology far behind that of developed countries in Europe and the United States. At the same time, he recognized that “domestic substitution” in the industrial sector would be a golden period of growth over the next decade. Given the high technical barriers of this project, its promising industry trends, and the sizable market potential, it perfectly met the criteria for a viable startup venture. Excited but also cautious, Liu Xi spent more than two years conducting preliminary technical validation and cultivating key technological partnerships. Once he confirmed the feasibility of the technology, the question arose: should he establish a company in the United States or return to China to start up? He wrestled with this decision, and many friends advised him to set up shop in the U.S. However, his deep sense of national pride ultimately proved decisive. As Liu Xi put it: “Establishing a company in the U.S. would certainly be financially advantageous, but it would only add another imported brand to the market while leaving a critical gap unaddressed—namely, the absence of Chinese brands. If that’s the case, why not develop a high-end smart valve positioner made by Chinese engineers, build a truly Chinese brand, fill this industry gap, and become a pioneer in ‘domestic substitution’?” With dreams and aspirations in tow, Liu Xi boarded a flight back to China and founded Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent Co., Ltd. in 2012, dedicating the company to the R&D and manufacturing of smart valve positioners. During the first year after his return, Liu Xi crisscrossed the country, familiarizing himself with the market and laying the groundwork for the company’s future growth. As a high-caliber overseas-educated entrepreneur returning to China, Liu Xi and his company received extensive support and awards from the Ministry of Science and Technology, provincial, municipal, and district-level authorities. In 2013, his project on “R&D of Smart Valve Positioners Based on Nozzle-Flapper Technology” secured funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the provincial science and technology department’s innovation fund; in 2018, his project on “High-End Smart Valve Positioners Based on Industrial Cloud Platforms” was selected for the 3551 Optics Valley Talent Program, earning Liu Xi the title of “11th Optics Valley 3551 Innovative Talent.” From the United States to China, from New York to Wuhan, the journey of entrepreneurship has been marked by both hardship and joy. Driven by the dream of transforming China’s backward industrial landscape, Liu Xi has persevered, steadily advancing step by step toward the future. Paving the Way for Intelligent Manufacturing and Strengthening China’s Industry A smart valve positioner is a type of valve positioner that leverages microprocessor technology, digital data processing, decision-making, and bidirectional communication to deliver intelligent process control. It is a valve positioner that requires no manual calibration, automatically detecting the zero point, full-scale range, friction coefficient of the associated control valve, and autonomously setting control parameters. With the rapid advancement of computer technology, electronics, communications, and intelligent predictive diagnostics, the market demand for smart valve positioners continues to grow. As a vital component of industrial systems, smart valve positioners play an indispensable role. However, the technical barriers to entry for such intelligent products are quite high, with some core technologies still firmly held by foreign companies, leaving China’s smart valve positioner technology relatively behind. Consequently, many critical processes in China’s industrial process control remain subject to technological bottlenecks imposed by foreign suppliers, severely hindering the country’s drive toward automation and intelligentization, as well as industrial safety and technological progress. “Drops of water may eventually form an ocean; pebbles piled one upon another can become Mount Tai.” Through years of dedicated research, fleeting flashes of inspiration, and the blazing fire of wisdom, Liu Xi finally unlocked a whole new world. Over two decades of accumulation and refinement laid a solid foundation for his development of smart valve positioners, while also igniting in him a passionate commitment to contributing to the rise of China’s industrial strength. Accumulation is invaluable, but diligence is even more precious. The true value of diligence lies in unwavering focus on one’s mission. Since its founding in 2012, Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent has remained steadfastly committed to the R&D of smart valve positioners under Liu Xi’s leadership, working tirelessly day after day, dedicating every effort to mastering a single skill and excelling in a single role. In 2013, the company’s self-developed Model A V1.0 made its debut at Wugang Oxygen Plant, successfully replacing four German SAMSON smart valve positioners. To date, these four positioners have been in operation for nearly seven years without a single production accident. In 2017, Wugang experienced its first-ever external power outage since the plant’s inception, causing backflow of cooling water in the cold-rolling mill’s secondary cooling workshop and resulting in failures across all 43 American FISHER positioners and valves. Despite urgent requests for FISHER replacement, the response was that the replacement cycle would take more than 50 days. With the plant shut down due to the accident and daily losses reaching millions, the workshop quickly turned to Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent, hoping they could turn the tide. Upon receiving Wugang’s request, Liu Xi personally led a team to the site, using his expert skills to troubleshoot on-site and devise a retrofit plan. First, five positioners were replaced for trial purposes; custom mounting brackets were fabricated overnight, and installation was completed within three days, meeting the workshop’s operational requirements. Following this success, Wugang placed an urgent order for 43 additional units, completing the full retrofit in just two weeks, ensuring uninterrupted production, minimizing losses, and cutting retrofit costs by two-thirds. Wuhan Tuoyou’s professional attitude toward “domestic substitution” and meticulous technical execution earned high praise from Wugang. It is precisely because of their dreams, sense of responsibility, pioneering spirit, and ability to overcome challenges that Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent has finally emerged as a leader in the industry. At the end of 2018, Yue Dian Jinghai Power Generation Co., Ltd. purchased 34 positioners to replace ABB positioners for damper control in its 660 MW unit, operating flawlessly for a year; at the end of 2019, the company again procured 34 positioners, successfully replacing ABB and maintaining stable operation; in early 2020, TORLEO Tuoyou positioners were deployed on the steam turbine side of a 1,000 MW power unit, replacing SIEMENS products and controlling FISHER valves with outstanding results. This marked the first time in China that domestically produced equipment replaced imported devices in the largest power-generating units, fulfilling the dream of every Tuoyou employee and becoming a source of pride for the entire team. Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent operates in an era of vigorous competition and relentless progress, boldly stepping forward as a pioneer, trailblazer, and contributor to the industry. In 2019, the company was awarded the “Integrity Enterprise” certificate by the Ministry of Commerce for its ethical business practices and became a nationally recognized “3.15 Quality Assurance Unit.” Founder Liu Xi was also named one of China’s Top Ten Artisan Figures, signifying that the tree of dreams has borne abundant fruit. Looking Far Ahead Along the River of Innovation “The way lies in constant renewal, and so too must our art; renewal brings vitality, stagnation leads to death.” On the path toward the rejuvenation of China’s industry, Liu Xi remains committed to innovation, driven by an insatiable spirit of creativity and a willingness to blaze new trails, leading Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent through obstacles and forging ahead. Liu Xi emphasizes that smart valve positioners are the core business and entry point for Wuhan Tuoyou Intelligent. Looking ahead, the company plans to integrate IoT technologies into all critical nodes of industrial pipelines—such as intelligent valve control, pipeline flow monitoring, pipeline safety monitoring, and pump operation safety monitoring—and leverage cloud computing and big data to establish an industrial pipeline IoT big data center. He believes that only by establishing itself as an industry leader and brand in the entry-point product category, with extensive application scenarios across the industrial sector, can the company effectively build a “China Pipeline IoT Big Data Center,” breaking through the current ceiling of the multi-billion-dollar smart valve positioner industry and entering the trillion-dollar industrial pipeline IoT value chain. He recognizes that talent is the key to realizing this vision. To this end, in addition to collaborating with universities on industry–university–research initiatives, he places great emphasis on talent development and team building as top priorities.
